How to Get Cited in ChatGPT and Perplexity

Getting cited in ChatGPT or appearing in Perplexity is not the same job as ranking a blog post for a head term. Models synthesize answers and pick sources they can retrieve and trust. This playbook is what we use at Nafets when clients ask how to show up in AI search.
For definitions of AI SEO, AEO, and GEO, see What is AI SEO?. For the service offering, visit AI SEO.
1. Start with prompts, not keywords alone
Write the questions a real buyer types into ChatGPT or Perplexity:
- “Best [category] for [use case]”
- “[Brand A] vs [Brand B]”
- “Who should I hire for [outcome]?”
- “How do I [solve problem] without [pain]?”
Run the same wording across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Note: mentioned, cited with a link, recommended, or absent. That baseline is your scoreboard.
2. Make pages easy to extract
AI systems prefer content that answers cleanly:
- Lead with a direct answer in the first screen
- Use question-style H2s that match prompts
- Add comparison tables and FAQs where useful
- Keep claims specific and attributable
- Use schema (Organization, Service, FAQ, Article) when it matches the page
Thin, fluffy, or purely promotional pages rarely become the cited source.
3. Stay retrievable
Different products use different crawl paths. In practice:
- Ensure important URLs return 200, self-canonicalize, and are in your sitemap
- Don’t block legitimate search/retrieval bots you intend to be visible to
- Separate training controls from search retrieval decisions carefully—don’t copy-paste robots rules without checking each bot’s role
If Google can’t index you cleanly, many AI surfaces that lean on the web will struggle too.
4. Earn presence off your domain
Owned content is necessary but often not enough. Models frequently lean on:
- Industry roundups and comparison articles
- Review and directory surfaces
- Expert commentary and reputable publications
- Community discussions where real users debate tools
A citation strategy without third-party corroboration usually stalls.
5. Measure citation share monthly
Re-run your fixed prompt set every month. Track:
- Mention rate (brand named)
- Citation rate (linked / attributed)
- Recommendation rate (“use them / hire them”)
- Which competitors win when you lose
Keyword rankings in Search Console remain useful for classic SEO—they are not a substitute for AI visibility.
Common mistakes
- Stuffing “ChatGPT SEO” into every title without answering a real question
- Publishing near-duplicate AI explainers that add no original expertise
- Ignoring classic technical SEO while chasing GEO buzzwords
- Changing the prompt wording every week so you can’t compare progress
